If a  dog is well behaved, house trained , obedient and does not create problems when left alone in the house, some pet owners prefer to let the dog lie around the house and sleep in a dog bed .
However, it is recommended that the dog spend some time in a kennel or dog. This has some advantages which include:
1. The dog becomes familiar with a kennel as a place to stay, and will not get scared if he is left alone in a kennel at a later date.
2. If the dog has to be treated by a vet, he may kept in a kennel overnight, which may further scare the dog.
3. If the family is traveling, the dog may have to be left in a kennel or carried in a dog crate.
4. If the dog becomes anxious and tears up furnishings when left alone in the house, it is better to keep him in a kennel.

The size should be large enough so that the dog can
1. Comfortably stand up
2. Lie down and sleep
3. can turn around comfortably

However, if the kennel is very big, the dog will consider it to be a new home and may not leave it for days.
Do not leave fabrics or any other item which can be torn to pieces or unraveled in the pet house.

A kennel can be purchased online at online stores like Amazon and Bass Pro Shops but it is usually more convenient to purchase it locally, as the kennel can be inspected before purchase and getting it replaced / repaired is easier.
Some gas stations also sell kennels and people may list second hand kennels for sale in local newspaper classifieds.
